Cedar, Aluminium or Colorbond? Choosing a Custom Garage Door That Survives Perth

A custom garage door is frequently the largest single element of a house's street elevation, and choosing one is usually presented as a question of taste. It is partly that. But the question that actually determines whether you are happy in five years is a different one: what is this material going to ask of me, at this address?

Perth applies two stressors harder than most Australian cities: ultraviolet, relentlessly, on any west-facing elevation; and salt, further inland than people expect. Here is how the common choices hold up against both.

Western Red Cedar and real timber

There is a reason cedar dominates the custom end. It is dimensionally stable, it is light for its size — which matters enormously on a door that has to be lifted several times a day — and it looks like nothing else. On the right house it is the correct answer.

It is also a commitment, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. Timber needs recoating on a schedule, and Perth UV shortens that schedule. A west-facing cedar door needs attention noticeably more often than a south-facing one on the same street. Not occasionally — as a matter of routine.

If you go this way, go into it with the maintenance interval understood and diarised. The doors that end up looking tired are almost never badly made; they are well-made doors that were sold as maintenance-free.

Timber-look on steel or aluminium

This category has improved enormously and it is where a great many people land once they understand the trade-off honestly. A modern woodgrain finish on an aluminium or steel substrate gives you most of the appearance with a fraction of the upkeep, and it does not move with humidity.

It is not indistinguishable from timber at close range, and if you are standing at the door every day you may notice. From the footpath — which is where the elevation is actually read from — the difference is small. Worth seeing samples at your own house, in your own light, before deciding.

Contemporary aluminium

For a genuinely coastal address, aluminium deserves serious consideration. It does not rust, and a quality powder-coat over it holds up well. It suits flush-fit and shadowline designs, it takes glazing and slatting cleanly, and it is light, which is easy on the mechanics.

The caveats are that a large aluminium panel needs proper engineering behind it to stay flat, and that powder-coat is still a coating — it can be chipped, and it is not immune to a marine environment, only much more tolerant of one.

Thermopanel and insulated doors

If the garage is anything other than a car park, insulation is the upgrade most people underrate. A west-facing uninsulated door in a Perth February turns the space into an oven, and a very large number of Perth garages are now workshops, gyms and home offices.

Insulated doors are also noticeably quieter, which matters if there is a bedroom above or beside the garage. The trade-off is weight — an insulated door is heavier than its uninsulated equivalent, which feeds straight into the mechanical specification below.

Colorbond® and pre-painted steel

The default for good reasons. Pre-painted steel is engineered for Australian conditions, the colour range matches the rest of the roof and gutter palette exactly, and it is the most economical way to get a durable finish. On many Perth houses it is straightforwardly the right choice and a custom door would be money spent on the wrong thing.

The thing that matters more than material: weight

Here is the failure we see most often on architectural doors in Perth, and it has nothing to do with the material anyone chose.

A custom timber or thermopanel door can weigh substantially more than the steel door it replaced. The springs and the motor must be specified to that finished weight. When a beautiful door is fitted with a standard package motor and a chart-selected spring set, the motor labours from the first week, the gearbox goes early, and the owner concludes that custom doors are unreliable. They are not. That one was under-engineered.

So when you are comparing quotes for a custom or architectural door, the questions worth asking are about the mechanical package as much as the panel: what does the finished door weigh, what spring set is specified against that weight, and what is the motor rated for. A quote that cannot answer those is not a complete quote.

And the part nobody plans for: who services it

Perth has excellent custom door manufacturers. Most of them are supply-and-install businesses — they build, they fit, and then they move on to the next project. Perth also has capable repair firms, most of whom have never worked on an architectural door.

Which leaves a predictable gap: an owner with a heavy, expensive, non-standard door that has started running rough, and nobody obvious to call. It is worth asking, before you commit, who is servicing this in three years — and getting an answer.
