Look at the house, not the catalogue

Elevation, orientation, materials already on the building, and what the door sits next to. A door that ignores the front door timber and the roof colour will look wrong however well it is made.

Specify for where it lives

West-facing elevations take serious UV. Anything within a few kilometres of the coast takes salt. Both change which finishes and which hardware make sense, and both change the maintenance you are signing up for. We say all of that before you choose, not after.

Engineer the mechanics for the weight

Custom doors are heavy, and the springs and motor have to be specified to the finished door's actual weight rather than to a nominal figure. This is where architectural doors most often go wrong mechanically — a beautiful door on an under-rated system.

Is a cedar garage door a bad idea in Perth?

Not at all — but it is a commitment, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. Western Red Cedar is beautiful, stable and light for its size, which is why it is used on custom doors. In Perth's UV it needs recoating on a schedule, and a west-facing cedar door needs it more often than a south-facing one. If you want the look with less upkeep, timber-look finishes on aluminium have improved enormously. We will tell you which one suits how you actually live rather than which one has the better brochure.

Can you service a custom door someone else installed?

Yes, and it is a large part of this work. Architectural doors are frequently supplied by manufacturers who install and then move on, leaving the owner with a heavy, expensive door and no obvious person to call when it starts running rough. We service and repair custom doors regardless of who supplied them, and we check the original warranty terms first so nothing we do puts your cover at risk.

My house is in a character area. What am I allowed to fit?

That depends on your local government and on whether the door is visible from the street. Several Perth councils apply design controls in character and heritage precincts, and they tend to care about proportion, material and how the door reads from the footpath rather than about the mechanism behind it. We have fitted doors under those constraints and we will tell you at the quote what is likely to be acceptable — but the approval is between you and your council, and we will never tell you something is approved when it is not.

Why does a custom door need a different motor?

Weight. A timber or thermopanel door can weigh substantially more than the steel door it replaces, and the springs and motor have to be specified to that finished weight. Fitting a standard package motor to a heavy custom door is the single most common mechanical failure we see on architectural installations — the motor labours from the first week and the gearbox goes early. We size both to the real weight, which occasionally means the mechanical package costs more than people expect.

How long does a custom garage door take?

Custom doors are made to order, so the lead time is the manufacturer's, not ours — it is materially longer than an off-the-shelf door and varies with the material and the finish. We give you the current realistic lead time at quote and we do not shorten it to win the job. If your existing door has failed and you need the garage secure in the meantime, we will make the old one safe and usable while the new one is built.
